Ultrasounds in the UK

Ultrasound in the UK has revolutionised the way in which women receive care throughout the duration of their pregnancy and the technique is now used as a routine way to examine the baby.

The process of seeing your baby on a screen is done through a technique known commonly as ultrasound. Ultrasound in the UK is widely available, as is the technique throughout the Western world as it is an inexpensive way to check the health of a baby as well as the sex. It also provides a fantastic way for parents to bond with their unborn child as it will be the first time that they actually get to see their child before it is born.

An ultrasound works by forming pictures from sound waves that are sent through the human body by a machine that convert into an image that can be seen on a screen. It is then common for the parents to take home various still pictures of the ultrasound that are shown in 3D, or more recently in 4D, which shows the baby moving.

The first ultrasound will usually be performed when a woman first attends a clinic for a pregnancy check up and then again at 18 weeks and again at 22 weeks. Ultrasound in the UK is available through the NHS as well as at private clinics and as well as picking up what sex and how healthy the baby is, it also provides parents with the all-important due date.
